UK Gambling Commission Implements Changes to Deposit Limits and Player Fund Protection
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has recently announced new changes to deposit limits and player fund protection in the British gaming industry. These changes are in line with the measures outlined in the 2023 white paper aimed at reforming the gaming sector for the digital age.
More Control for Players
One of the key changes introduced by the UKGC is giving players more control over their deposit limits. The new rules allow players to have greater freedom in setting their limits and protecting themselves from overspending. These changes are set to take effect on October 31, requiring operators to prompt consumers to set limits before their first deposit and allowing easy modification of these limits afterwards.
This move aims to make deposit limit practices more transparent and intuitive for players, ensuring they can easily set and review their limits whenever necessary.
Enhanced Fund Protection Measures
Operators will also be required to enhance player fund protection measures, including clarifying terms and conditions for holding player money and how these funds would be protected in case of insolvency. Levels of protection range from no segregation to high protection, with operators mandated to communicate this information during a player’s initial deposit.
Operators falling under the first two categories must notify customers every six months that their funds are not protected, emphasizing transparency in fund protection measures.
Arrival of the Statutory Levy
The UKGC has also warned operators of the forthcoming introduction of the statutory levy. Currently, operators are required to make voluntary donations to designated research, prevention, and treatment organizations. However, this system will be replaced once the statutory levy is enforced, expected to be in April.
The UKGC will communicate the exact date of implementation to licensees once it is finalized, as the commission aims to ensure a fair and customer-friendly gaming market.

Tim Miller, the UKGC’s executive director for research and policy, expressed the commission’s dedication to fostering fairness and customer-friendly practices in the gambling industry. These changes will empower consumers to make informed decisions on deposit limits, monitor their spending, and understand the protection of their funds in case of operator insolvency.
Miller affirmed that the UKGC will continue working on other commitments outlined in the white paper to further enhance the gaming industry’s integrity and consumer protection.
