UK Gambling Commission Seeks Public Input on Deposit Limits
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is reaching out to the British public to gather feedback on the implementation of deposit limits. This new consultation period will remain open until April 30, allowing consumers to voice their opinions on the matter.
Confusion Surrounding Different Types of Limits
The UKGC’s latest initiative revolves around the introduction of new consumer control regulations scheduled to take effect in October 2025. These changes align with the recommendations presented in the 2023 Gambling Act review white paper, aiming to modernize the gambling industry for the digital era.
Traditionally, deposit limits enabled customers to set a maximum amount of money they could deposit within a specific timeframe. For instance, individuals with a £20 weekly deposit limit could only add up to £20 to their accounts in that week, regardless of their wins or losses.
However, operators are now adopting a different approach known as “net deposit limits.” Unlike the conventional method, net deposit limits consider both deposits and withdrawals. For example, a customer with a £20 deposit limit who withdraws £10 would still be allowed to deposit an additional £10, effectively increasing the overall limit to £30.
UKGC’s Proposed Solutions
The UKGC has highlighted the potential confusion that arises from the two types of deposit limits, especially due to their similar descriptions. In its fourth white paper consultation, the commission proposed clarifications on the definition of “deposit limits” and other financial restrictions in its Remote Gambling and Software Technical Standards.
The main objective of these changes is to enhance the clarity of the RTS wording and optimize the gambling system to empower consumers to monitor and control their gambling habits effectively. The UKGC has encouraged all stakeholders, including consumers, gambling licensees, and the general public, to share their views on these proposals.
Ongoing Consultation Period
Moreover, the UKGC recently initiated the third round of white paper consultations in late January, focusing on the technical standards for land-based gaming machines and the corresponding testing strategy. This consultation phase will continue until May 20, 2025.
