Thai Police Crackdown on Illegal Gambling
Thai authorities have been cracking down on illegal gambling activities in an effort to protect the community and uphold the law. Since the beginning of the year, police in Johor have disconnected electricity to a total of 470 illegal gambling premises in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
Intensified Efforts to Combat Illegal Online Casinos
The recent operation in late February targeted 86 illegal gambling sites, resulting in the disconnection of their power supply. In addition, eight business licenses were revoked as part of the enforcement action. The joint operation involved Johor police, local councils, and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) with the aim of dismantling unlicensed gambling operations and preventing their resurgence.
Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar emphasized the authorities’ commitment to eradicating gambling crimes for the betterment of the community. The enforcement team comprised 64 senior and junior police officers, 48 TNB personnel, and seven local government officials who carried out the shutdowns under the Open House Gambling Act 1953.
Crackdown on Illegal Gambling Syndicates
During the operation, authorities confiscated equipment from seven locations in Muar and one in Tangkak, while the licenses of eight premises were revoked. Kumar highlighted that gambling syndicates utilize digital platforms to attract players and collect payments. Although horse racing and lottery gambling are legal in Malaysia, strict bans are imposed on sports betting and online gambling.
Following the operation, the police have requested the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block access to illicit websites targeted in the crackdown. The zero-tolerance policy towards illegal gambling underscores the authorities’ determination to combat the issue effectively.
Community Participation Crucial in Eradicating Illegal Gambling
Kumar warned landlords to ensure that their properties are not being used for gambling activities and stressed the importance of owners taking responsibility. Authorities will take action against premises found to be involved in illegal gambling. In addition to cutting power and seizing equipment, the public is encouraged to report any suspected gambling activities.
Community participation is deemed vital in eradicating illegal gambling, and the police have pledged to conduct further operations to prevent its proliferation. Kumar stated that the authorities will not compromise on addressing gambling-related offenses and will continue to monitor and inspect premises suspected of involvement in gambling activities.
