ACMA Cracks Down on Seven More Illegal Online Gambling Websites
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has intensified its efforts in combating illegal online gambling operators by taking action against seven more websites. These operators have been referred for ISP blocking to prevent them from targeting Australian players.
Illegal Websites Subjected to ISP Blocking
The ACMA identified seven illegal online gambling websites that have been engaging in offshore gaming activities without the necessary licenses. These websites include Casiny, CoinPoker, Crown Play, Fafabet9, SlotFred, Smart 93, and Vigor Spin.
Previously, the ACMA had already blocked Crown Slots and Billy Billion for similar offenses. The authority reiterated that these operators are operating illegally in Australia and that website blocking is a crucial enforcement measure to protect local players from the risks associated with the black market.
1,251 Sites Blocked So Far
Since November 2019, the ACMA has blocked a total of 1,251 illegal gambling and affiliate websites. Moreover, 220 illegal services have voluntarily withdrawn from the Australian market to comply with the country’s regulations on illegal online gambling enforced since 2017.
The ACMA emphasized the importance of players being cautious when accessing online gambling websites, even those that appear legitimate. The authority advised consumers to check the legitimacy of a service on the ACMA’s website to ensure their safety and protection.
ACMA Imposes Fine on Tabcorp
In a recent development, the ACMA fined Tabcorp AUD 4 million ($2.6 million) for serious breaches of spam laws. The operator was found to have sent excessive messages to VIP players without offering them the option to unsubscribe, violating regulations on spam communication.
Notably, this was the first time the ACMA had identified spam breaches in a gambling VIP program. The authority also uncovered self-exclusion violations by Buddybet, Ultrabet, VicBet, and Topbet, followed by penalties imposed on PointsBet for breaching spam and self-exclusion laws.
