Ten Network Faces Penalties for Gambling Advertising Violations
Ten Network, the Australian commercial television network part of Ten Network Holdings, has recently come under scrutiny for violating gambling advertising regulations during its coverage of the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in March 2024.
Discovery of Gambling Advertisements During Grand Prix Coverage
An investigation carried out by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) revealed that four gambling advertisements were aired during the first practice round of the Grand Prix, breaching strict regulations that prohibit such ads during sporting events between 5:00 AM and 8:30 PM. These restrictions also extend to the five-minute windows before and after the event.
This was the first instance of Network Ten being found in violation of gambling advertising regulations, which was attributed to human error.
Network Ten Implements Preventive Measures
In response to ACMA’s findings, Network Ten has taken proactive steps to avoid similar breaches in the future. The company has enhanced its planning procedures and introduced additional checks and balances to improve its ad scheduling process.
Moreover, ACMA has requested the network to conduct a thorough review of its internal processes and implement more quality control measures. Network Ten’s staff will undergo additional training to ensure compliance and will provide ACMA with a progress report detailing improvements and ongoing efforts.
ACMA Emphasizes the Importance of Regulations
ACMA Authority member Carolyn Lidgerwood emphasized the importance of protecting the public from the harmful effects of gambling. She stated, “Broadcasters must have stringent controls in place to ensure compliance with restrictions on gambling ads during sporting events.”
According to current guidelines, motorsport practice and qualifying sessions are subject to the same restrictions on gambling advertising as the main event.
Strict Monitoring of Network Ten’s Compliance
In addition to the investigation into Network Ten, ACMA has directed Australian Internet Service Providers to block more illegal gambling and affiliate sites, including JokaRoom, AUDPokies888, and Wild Pokies. Since November 2019, a total of 1,154 sites have been blocked, and around 220 illegal services have exited the Australian market since 2017.
ACMA has committed to closely monitoring Network Ten’s adherence to broadcasting and online gambling advertising regulations to ensure compliance with the rules.
